E.D.E.N. - End Discrimination; Equality Now!

EDEN is Lambda's new politial committee. It has its own page to keep members updated on what's going on with the committee. EDEN was formed in September of 2008 as a result of several members' decision to change a single policy at FAU and then move onto others.

That policy is FAU's Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment regulation, which can be found in full here.

The Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Regulation is Regulation 5.010 at FAU.

The ADAH Regulation states that the University commits itself to ensure that every member of the University Community shall be protected from "any form of unlawful discrimination or harassment that is based on a legally protected class, including race, color, religion, age, disability, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status or any other basis protected by law."

Please note that neither sexual orientation nor gender identity are included in that list. The ADAH policy also states that: "The University recognizes its obligation to work towards a community in which diversity is valued and opportunity is equalized."
Equalized. Since the University first opened in 1964, there have been countless incidents of homophobia documented at FAU, and the University does nothing about it. If you look at Lambda's history, we first tried in 1992 to get sexual orientation and gender identity included on the harassment and discrimination bill, but that was in a time when the Florida Legislature decided what happened as far as the school's policies were concerned, and at that time the Florida Legislature was still remembering Anita Bryant's Save Our Children Campaign, which also made it illegal in the State of Florida for admitted homosexuals to adopt children. Today, however, we only need to change the minds of the Board of Trustees and President Brogan. Brogan has been going out of his way to avoid addressing this issue for several years, and it's time that we put him into a corner and address this fully. What we need to do is get the wording of the policy changed. The University follows Palm Beach guidelines, which do protect sexual orientation, but what about gender identity?

We don't get attacked because people know we're gay/lesbian/bisexual whatever they're attacking us for that day at that time. We get attacked because they think we are, and that is why it's so important to have gender identity protected at FAU, and also to have both sexual orientation and gender identity protected in writing on the Anti-Discrimination Anti-Harassment policy.
